TPRS’s Patch Material – PTFE coated e-glass fabric

PTFE Coated E-glass Fabric

Why PTFE-Coated E-Glass Fabric Is an Exceptional Patch Material

PTFE-coated E-glass fabric combines two materials with remarkably complementary properties. The E-glass reinforcement provides high tensile strength, dimensional stability and resistance to stretching, while the PTFE coating protects the glass fibers from moisture, chemicals, contamination and environmental exposure. Together, they create a patch material that is strong enough to reinforce damaged infrastructure, yet flexible enough to conform closely to pipes, tanks, elbows, joints and irregular surfaces.

Unlike rigid repair plates, PTFE-coated E-glass fabric can distribute loads across a larger area without creating the severe stress concentrations that often occur at the edges of a rigid patch. Multiple fabric layers can be applied in different directions to increase strength, improve containment and match the requirements of the repair. This allows the patch architecture to be adjusted according to the size of the damage, operating pressure, substrate geometry and expected service conditions.

PTFE adds exceptional resistance to water, corrosion, weathering and a broad range of chemicals. It also has a low coefficient of friction and excellent release characteristics, helping protect the underlying reinforcement from adhesion by contaminants and accumulated material. E-glass does not rust, rot or corrode like conventional metal reinforcement. The resulting composite is therefore particularly well suited for demanding municipal, industrial, marine, mining and infrastructure environments.

Historically, PTFE’s greatest weakness as a repair material has been its extremely low surface energy: conventional adhesives generally cannot form a reliable bond to it. Tech-Bond’s patented Polymer Bonding Process™ changes that limitation into a strategic advantage. By enabling PTFE-coated E-glass fabric to be bonded to HDPE and other difficult substrates—and by bonding additional engineered layers to the fabric—the Process makes it possible to use PTFE where conventional repair systems generally cannot.

Within TPRS™, the fabric does more than cover a leak. It becomes the structural reinforcement and containment layer within a complete engineered repair architecture. The Polymer Bonding Process attaches it to the original substrate; additional applications of the Process connect it to Poly Fill™; and Poly Shield™ protects the completed repair. Each material performs a distinct function, while Intelligent Interface Engineering™ controls how the layers interact and transfer loads.

For these reasons, PTFE-coated E-glass fabric is arguably the best available foundation for the TPRS patch architecture. It combines strength, flexibility, conformability, chemical resistance, environmental durability and multilayer scalability in a single material. Most importantly, Tech-Bond possesses the enabling technology required to bond it effectively and integrate it into a unified repair system—turning a high-performance fabric into an engineered structural repair.

Using PTFE coated e-glass fabric as opposed to standard fiberglass will result in better performance. Increased performance translates to cost saving. Savings is an attitude.
